Chapter 1

A boy ran along the main street of the village calling out “It's our turn again. Gather together.”

A young boy of eleven heard the message that the boy screamed. He looked up to his eldest brother to ask what is going on, but the fearful expression on his hyung's face stopped him.

“Let's hurry and get home, Min.” said the elder one. And both went quickly to their house.

“We’re back.” Jaejoong called out and put the groceries on the table. “Su~ah, where is Umma?” he asked.

“At the meeting.” answered the soft voice of the called one. “She should be hungry, when she comes back.” was added to the answer.

“Changmin could you go and get some water, so that we can prepare dinner.” Jaejoong told the youngest. The boy went out to get the water as the other two put the groceries away and started to prepare dinner.

The house was filled with the smell of the dinner as their mother came back from the villagers’ meeting. They all sat at the table and had started to eat as Jaejoong asked their mother. “Umma, who have you chosen to be sent this time?”

“This time it will be our Hyesu who will have the chance.” said their proud mother.

“But Umma, Hyesu is my hyung!” reminded Changmin.

“Don't call her that, she is your nuna.” demanded the mother. “Jaejoong, accompany her to the eldest’s home after dinner.”

“Yes, mother.”

After dinner, Jaejoong and Hyesu got ready to leave for the eldest’s house. They walked along the street in silence. The younger one was deep in his thoughts and kept his head down. Jaejoong looked at his brother. He had light, shoulder-length brown hair, almond-shaped eyes which shined so beautifully when he was happy, a little nose, and full lips. At the moment he wore a hanbok in a light green. He looked really beautiful. The smaller one looked up at Jaejoong.

“Oppa, why? Why am I the one who is chosen?” he asked shyly.

“Oppa? Of course. He only calls me hyung when we are alone.” thought Jaejoong and answered “I don't know, Su~ah.”

They arrived at the eldest’s house and knocked on the door. After a short time the eldest opened the door and let Jaejoong and Hyesu into the house. Both bowed and followed him inside. He offered a chair to Hyesu before he sat down himself. Jaejoong stood behind her.

“Hyesu, do you know why you’re here?” began the eldest.

“Yes, sir. I was chosen to be the offering.” she answered softly and with sadness in her voice.

“Yeah, you are here so we can speak about the ceremony.” the eldest continued, but was interrupted by Jaejoong.

“Eldest, why must it be Hyesu? Isn't there anyone else who can do it?”

“My dear boy, you know the terms and conditions of the lord, and Hyesu is the only one who meets them.”

Jaejoong laid a comforting hand on her shoulder. The light brown haired girl (or boy. Whichever u choose) was looking down on her folded hands.

“Hyesu, my dear Hyesu.” the eldest spoke to her and made her to look up and into the man’s old, brown eyes. “You turn seventeen tomorrow and we shouldn't wait too long to send you. We don't want to anger the lord, so it would be the best if we sent you to him tomorrow.”

They talked more about the details as the wife of the eldest came into the room. Hyesu stood up to bow to her. Within seconds she was in the embrace of the teary woman.

“My precious Hyesu” she cried. “You shouldn't be so sad, maybe you are the one that the lord will choose to marry. You should be happy.”

The words let fly the tears that Hyesu had been holding back for so long.

“Maybe I'm the one.” she said with a hoarse voice. “But I'm not the person they all think I am.” she thought.

All the fear of what would happen when the lord found out that she wasn't a girl made her break down in the arms of the eldest’s wife. Her tears wouldn’t stop and her body began to shake. Jaejoong took Hyesu in his arms and tried to console her.

“I will help you. I won't let you suffer.” he whispered in her ear so that nobody except Hyesu could hear it.

“It's late, Eldest. Our mother is waiting. We should go back.” said Jaejoong to the couple.

“You are right, my boy. Give her my greetings. And Hyesu, don't worry about it too much.”

They both bowed to them again. Jaejoong wrapped an arm around Hyesu's shoulder and they went home.
